Mayan Symbol for the One God

The Hunab Ku is a symbol often associated with the Maya civilization and is commonly described as representing “The One God” or “The Sole God,” a concept in Maya cosmology. However, its origins and interpretations have a more complex history that blends ancient Mesoamerican ideas with modern reinterpretations.

“Hunab Ku” translates to “One God” or “The One Giver of Movement and Measure” in Yucatec Maya. There is limited evidence that the ancient Maya explicitly used this term in their classic texts or glyphs. Most references to Hunab Ku appear in post-Columbian sources, particularly in the writings of 16th-century Spanish missionaries, such as Diego de Landa, who may have incorporated Christian monotheistic interpretations into their descriptions of Maya spirituality.  While not directly tied to an ancient glyph, the idea of a central, unifying force aligns with Maya cosmology, which often emphasized balance, duality, and interconnectedness in the universe.

The Hunab Ku symbol widely recognized today—a swirling, symmetrical design resembling a yin-yang—is not an authentic pre-Columbian Maya artifact. It was popularized by Mexican philosopher and esotericist José Argüelles in the late 20th century. Argüelles introduced the symbol in his writings on the Dreamspell calendar and the Law of Time, blending Maya traditions with New Age philosophies. He described it as a representation of universal consciousness, unity, and the balance of opposites.

The Hunab Ku is often seen as a symbol of harmony, the integration of opposites, and the cyclical nature of life, time, and the cosmos. It is associated with universal consciousness, the interconnectedness of all things, and the balance between masculine and feminine energies, reminiscent of the yin-yang concept.  The symbol has become a representation of the blending of ancient Mesoamerican spirituality and modern global mysticism.
